This international workshop is the second event in a series of workshops on Methods of Gesture Analysis (MGA). The workshop brings together experts in gesture research and doctoral students as well as post-docs who wish to receive hands-on training in gesture analysis. While the focus of MGA I, which took place at the European University Viadrina in October 2007, was on the description and categorization of gestural forms (form parameters and gesture phase coding), MGA II is dedicated to the analysis of the various semantic functions co-speech gestures may exhibit, e.g., the identification of cognitive-semiotic principles such as iconicity, indexicality, metaphor, and metonymy. Moreover, special attention is paid to the distribution of semantic features across the two modalities. MGA III (planned for spring 2008) will cover the interplay of semantic and pragmatic functions of co-speech gestures.
